Third Emergency Aid to be Extended from Japan to Myanmar in Response to the Flood Disaster
1. On 8th September, during the Cabinet meeting, H.E. Mr. Fumio KISHIDA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the deadly floods. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Japan to extend further support for those who have been forced to evacuate in light of the resulting floods.

2. Myanmar has been hit by heavy rain since 16th July, which has caused flooding in many parts of the country, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate.

3. Based on the request to Japan from H.E. U Thein Sein, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Government of Japan has decided to continue rapidly extending necessary support of up to approximately 5 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 40 million USD) for reconstruction of schools, provision of water purification vehicles and well borers.

4. The Government of Japan has provided assistance twice already for this year’s flooding as follows:

1) On 4th August, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods such as blankets, sleeping pads and plastic sheets worth 18 million Japanese Yen (approximately 150,000 USD) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
2) On 14th August, the Government of Japan decided to extend Emergency Grant Aid of 2.6 million US Dollars (approximately 325 million JPY) for emergency humanitarian assistance in such areas as food, water and sanitation, shelter, and Non Food Items (NFIs), to be extended in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) , the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
