Additional Emergency Assistance to Myanmar in Flood Response

1. On Wednesday, September 24, the handover ceremony of mosquito nets for the flood affected people was held at Yangon International Airport. H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan handed over the relief goods to Dr. Than Win, Deputy Director General, Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health. Officials of the Embassy of Japan and JICA Myanmar Office were also present at this handover ceremony.

2. The Government of Japan decided on September 17 to provide 10,000 mosquito nets (LLIN: long lasting insecticidal net) as emergency relief goods to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the appeal from Myanmar following the recent floods.

3. The previous emergency assistance from Government of Japan to the flood responses are :
1) On 4th August, the Government of Japan provided emergency relief goods such as blankets, sleeping pads and plastic sheets worth 18 million Japanese Yen (approximately 150,000 USD) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
2) On 14th August, the Government of Japan extended Emergency Grant Aid of 2.6 million US Dollars (approximately 325 million JPY) for emergency humanitarian assistance in such areas as food, water and sanitation, shelter, and Non Food Items (NFIs), to be extended in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP) , the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
3) On 8th September, the Government of Japan has provided Grant Assistance of approximately 5 billion Japanese Yen (approximately 40 million USD) for reconstruction of schools, provision of water purification vehicles and well borers.
