The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance, will provide a grant aid of US$ 75,148 to "Wachet Sanga Hospital" in Sagaing Hills for procurement of some essential medical equipment and capacity-building training for its health staff. Wachet Sanga Hospital was established by Venerable Sayadaw (monk) U Lakkhana, on charity basis, in Wachet Village in 1984 in order to address the medical needs of the monks, nuns and yogis who have been taking refuge and have been performing religious duties in Sagaing Hills. The service is later extended to laymen dwelling around the area at very minimal fees. At present, the hospital has 50 beds managed by 2 doctors, 3 nurses and 14 nurse aids. In 2002, the hospital had rendered medical services to 3,069 outpatients and 432 inpatients including 225 surgical cases. With a view to contributing to more efficient medical services at the hospital, patient monitor, ultrasound, surgical sets, pulse oximeter and some consumable items such as needle, tracheal tube, etc will be funded. Besides, the costs related to acquiring resource persons from Japan for staff capacity-building will also be covered. The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 25 March 2005 at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Ven. U Lakkhana, Chairperson/Founder of "Wachet Sanga Hospital". |
