The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 90,000 to “Lower Myanmar Medical Research Department” for provision of Hepatitis C test kits for that Department. The Department has been engaged in provision of reagents for screening hepatitis infection in blood donors, hematological investigations on children when necessary, and preparation and provision of blood components and derivatives for patients with hematological disorders. Since May 2000, the Department in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been participating in the project for Control of Hepatitis C in Myanmar. As the main route of transmission, screening of the blood and blood products before transfusion is vital. Through this project, Hepatitis C positive donors are detected and transmission to poor patients could be prevented. As the test kits provided by JICA are almost gone, the gap until the new product comes out will be addressed through Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. Under the programme, the Government of Japan will provide fund for the procurement of Hepatitis C test kits, blood bags and accessories for the benefit of the needy. The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 6 June 2005 at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Myo Khin, Director of “Lower Myanmar Medical Research Department”. |
