JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

FOR PROVISION OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

FOR POPA SANGA HOSPITAL IN MANDALAY DIVISION

8 June 2005

The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 33,016 to “Popa Sanga Hospital” for upgrading of medical services at that hospital in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Division.

In response to the need for a health facility for the dwellers and the pilgrims to Popa area, a retired medical doctor in his monkhood initiated a free dispensary at the foot of Popa Mountain in 2000. After his demise, current caretaker U Pyinnyathami ? a venerable monk presiding in that area and some benevolent health staff took over it and extended its services to 13 needy villages in the environment. With the establishment of the facility, minor to moderate health needs are well addressed and emergency cases can be referred to Kyaukpadaung Township Hospital which is 10 miles away from Popa. For better diagnosis and cure, medical equipment such as ECG, x-ray, ultrasound, oxygen concentrator, minor surgical set, microscope, operation lamp, operation table, examination table, patient trolley and suction machine will be funded.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 8 June 2005 at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Ven. U Pyinnyathami, Representative of “Popa Sanga Hospital”.
