FOR "IMPROVEMENT OF MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH CARE SERVICES

(PHASE VI)"

09 November 2005

The Exchange of Notes of the Grant Aid of the Japanese Government for "Improvement of Maternal and Child Health Care Services (Phase VI)" was signed between His Excellency Mr. Nobutake Odano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Union of Myanmar and Ms. Carroll C. Long, Representative, UNICEF in Myanmar, at Sedona Hotel in Yangon on 9 November 2005.

This project has been developed through consultations among the Ministry of Health in Myanmar, the Government of Japan and UNICEF, aiming at improving the health care for mothers and children in Myanmar, especially in rural areas. The Government of Japan will provide a Grant Aid of US$ 3.8 million for the purchase of mosquito nets and essential drugs for malaria, several vaccines, for instance, measles, tetanus and test kits for the HIV/AIDS and so on. They will be distributed to township hospitals and rural health facilities in Myanmar through UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of the Union of Myanmar.

The Government of Japan provided a series of assistance under Grant Aid for five consecutive phases for the trilateral cooperation project. Total assistance for the same project amounted to US$ 25.5 million from 1999 to 2005.

The continuing of the Grant Aid aims to achieve one of the main objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to improve the survival, health, development and welfare of children and mothers in Myanmar.
