JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

FOR CONSTRUCTION OF NORTH OKKALAPA NO.32 PRIMARY SCHOOL

IN YANGON DIVISION

8 December 2005

The Government of Japan, under the Grassroots Grant Assistance scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 48,072 to “North Okkalapa No. 32 Primary School Construction Committee” for construction of a school in North Okkalapa Township, Yangon Division.

The history of the school dated back to 1977 when a brick noggin schoolhouse was constructed. The facility has deteriorated greatly after 27 years of operation that re-construction of the school becomes a major concern for the community. However, the community hardly affords the renovation let alone a new building. In order to provide a better learning environment for 396 students and 7 teachers attending that school, the construction of a school comprised of eight classrooms and an office, school furniture, water and sanitation facilities will be funded. It is expected that the improvement of the facilities would benefit the children in their pursuit of formal education.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 8 December 2004 at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Ni, Chairman of “North Okkalapa No. 32 Primary School Construction Committee”.
