JAPAN 'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Renovation of National Health Laboratory (Upper Myanmar)

in Mandalay Division

27 February 2006

The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme , will provide a grant aid of US$ 73,485 to “National Health Laboratory” for renovation of its Mandalay branch.

The Mandalay laboratory was established in 1970 to cater the public health laboratory needs in Upper Myanmar. At that time, it was attached to TB Campaign building in Mandalay . It covers Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions, and Kachin, Chin and Northern Shan States . Since the establishment, it has been benefiting public health facilities, disease control programmes and some clinical management of patients. Recently, the Ministry of Health has provided a separate building for the laboratory, however, the single-storeyed building needs some renovation for proper functioning as a health laboratory. In consideration of that important fact, renovation of the facility including electrical works and installation of a water supply system will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. It is expected that the contribution would benefit the needy population and enhance the laboratory's efficiency.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 24 February 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon between Mr. H iroshi Kawamura , Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Tin Nyunt, Director of “ National Health Laboratory”.
