for Procurement of Medical Equipment

for National Blood Center at Yangon General Hospital

28 February 2006

The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 83,420 to “National Blood Center at Yangon General Hospital” for procurement of medical lab equipment for that center.

National Blood Center was established in 1932 as a blood bank in Yangon General Hospital compound and later upgraded to a blood center in 2003. The center's functions vary from collection of blood from the volunteer donors, blood grouping, matching, screening and producing blood products . In addition, the center serves as a proper storage for the blood and blood products for the needy patients receiving treatment at the public hospitals in Yangon. In consideration of the prompt and more sensitive tests in blood screening at the facility, equipment such as Eci Immunoassay Analyzer, Thermo Cell Washer, Dry Bath, Refrigirated Centrifuge, Platelet Incubator with Agitator, Chemistry Analyzer and Coagulometer will be funded. It is expected that the assistance will contribute to safe blood transfusion thereby preventing unwanted infections.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 28 February 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Daw Nu Nu Tha, Medical Superintendent of “Yangon General Hospital”.
