JAPAN 'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Construction of a Primary and Middle School for Fire Victims

from Hlaing Township in Yangon Division

The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ The Government of Japan has decided to extend Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) of US$ 93,000 to “School Construction Committee for Fire Victims in Hlaing Township ” for the “Project for Construction of a Primary and Middle School for Fire Victims from Hlaing Township , Yangon Division”.


The fire broke out in Hlaing Township on 28 November 2005 gutting 1,557 homes and leaving 1,962 families homeless. After being temporarily accommodated in relief camps, the victims moved to area prepared by authorities in Shwe Pyi Thar Township in Yangon . Representatives from various departmental concerned and local communities realized the emergency need for a school building for the children in the new location for the next school season starting from June 2006 and formed the Committee.


In consideration of a proper learning environment for those children on a humanitarian background, the Government of Japan decided to provide the fund for the two single-storied reinforced concrete school buildings comprised of (9) classrooms, an office room, school furniture, and water and sanitation facilities.


The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 1 March 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Aye Kyu, Chairman of the “School Construction Committee for Fire Victims in Hlaing Township ”.
