JAPAN 'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Construction of Nga Krauk Zay - Ohn Daw Bridge

in Rakhine State

2 March 2006

The Government of Japan, under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 40,171 to “Nga Krauk Zay ? Ohn Daw Bridge Construction Committee” for construction of a bridge connecting Nga Krauk Zay and Ohn Daw blocks in Mrauk-U Township in Eastern Rakhine State.

Current wooden bridge which was constructed in 1985 is deteriorating and hampering the daily activities of the people living there. Moreover, poor infrastructure limits community's access to public facilities and the flow of goods and services available in the region. In consideration of the all round betterment of the population residing in Nga Krauk Zay and Ohn Daw blocks, construction of a car-passable reinforced concrete bridge will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. The project will be implemented with the technical assistance from Bridge Asia Japan (BAJ), a Japanese NGO which has been operational in Myanmar since 1995. It is expected that the bridge would contribute to the better flow of people, commodities and services in order to improve the standard of living in the area.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 2 March 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon, between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Maung Maung Htun, a member on behalf of the Chairman of “Nga Krauk Zay ? Ohn Daw Bridge Construction Committee”.
