JAPAN 'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Community-based Malaria Control Programme

in Rakhine State

8 March 2006

The Government of Japan, under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme, will provide a grant aid of US$ 91,418 to “Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme, Rakhine State” for their malaria prevention and control activities in Kyauk Taw and Ponnagyun townships in Rakhine State.

With reference to the health personnel in Rakhine State , malaria is one of the major health problems there and both selected townships are highly malarious because of the topography favorable for transmission. Due to poor knowledge on preventive measures and inferior access to health facilities and treatment when infected, the incidence caused by malaria has been a concern. In response to this, Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme in Rakhine State has adopted the community-based malaria prevention and control programme to reduce the burden of malaria in targeted townships of Kyauk Taw and Ponnagyun. Recognizing the importance of the programme, the Government of Japan has decided to provide fund for procurement of rapid diagnostic test kits, insecticide for the nets, anti-malaria drugs, motorcycles for outreach activities and some laboratory accessories.

The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 8 March 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Chan Thar, Team Leader of “Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme, Rakhine State ”.
