JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Construction of Nga Work Swe Village Bridge in Rakhine State

3 October 2006

The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme , will provide a grant aid of US$ 40,597 to “Nga Work Swe Village Bridges Construction Committee” for construction of a bridge and a jetty at Nga Work Swe Village in Pauk Taw Township in Rakhine State .

Current wooden bridge which was constructed in 1983 is seriously deteriorating and hampering the daily activities of the people living there. Moreover, poor infrastructure limits community's access to public facilities and the flow of goods and services available in the region. As Nga Work Swe Village has to rely on its neighbors for health, education and social matters, building a strong and durable bridge has always been a concern for the villagers; however, they are financially incapable to do so. In consideration of the all round betterment of the population residing in Nga Work Swe and seven surrounding villages, construction of a reinforced concrete foot-path bridge, a jetty and a gravel approach road will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. The project will be implemented with the technical assistance from Bridge Asia Japan (BAJ), a Japanese NGO which has been operational in Myanmar since 1995. It is expected that the funded facilities would contribute to the better flow of people, commodities and services in order to improve the standard of living in the area.

The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 3 October 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Aung Kyaw Phyu, Secretary on behalf of the Chairman of “ Nga Work Swe Village Bridges Construction Committee”.
