The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme , will provide a grant aid of US$ 74,701 to “Mahar Gunika Yama School Construction Committee” for construction of Mahar Gunika Yama Monastic School in Inndakaw Model Village in Bago Division.
The village is situated about 58km north of Yangon and has a total population of 18,094 from 2,032 households. Majority of the villagers make a living as daily wagers or engage in small-scale agriculture. Those families have to rely on Mahar Gunika Yama monastic school for their children's primary school studies because the institution provides free education including some stationery. The history of this school dates back to 1966 in religious buildings such as ordination hall and shrine hall of the monastery accommodating a total of 200 students. In its 40 years of operation, the number of students has risen to 425 that the space becomes very tight. In order to solve the overcrowding issue to provide a better learning environment for the students, a two-storeyed reinforced concrete school building, school furniture and water and sanitation facilities will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme.
The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 4 October 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Khin Soe, Chairman of “ Mahar Gunika Yama Monastic School Construction Committee”.
