JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Strengthening of Regional Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Mandalay

26 October 2006

The Government of Japan will provide a grant aid of US$ 89,871 to “Mandalay Regional Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory” for upgrading of the facilities under its Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme .

In early March 2006, the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak occurred in 13 townships in Mandalay and Sagaing divisions in Central Myanmar . Timely disease control measures such as confining restrictive zones, proper slaughter and disposal of infected poultry, disinfection, etc were strictly performed by the relevant authorities that the situation was under control in a short period. However, based on the experience of AI in other countries, recurrence of the disease could happen at any time in future. To be able to undertake effective disease surveillance and diagnosis on poultry at the Mandalay Regional Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, the Government of Japan under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme will provide funding for procurement of essential diagnostic equipment such as complete PCR unit, deep freezer, biohazard cabinet, egg incubator, autoclave, vortex mixer, personal protective equipment, lab apparatus, etc. It is expected that the assistance would improve the laboratory's diagnostic capacities and contribute to healthy living of the population dwelling in Central Myanmar .

The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 26 October 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. U Huat Chan, In-charge of “Mandalay Regional Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory”.
