The Government of Japan, under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA), will provide a grant aid of US$ 85,345 to “ Aide Médicale Internationale (AMI) ” for safe water supply in Dala Township in Yangon Division.
Dala Township is situated at the south of Yangon city center, across the Yangon River . The settlement started in 1959 and currently, there are approximately 80,000 people living there. Majority of the residents are less well off as they are mostly daily-wagers. According to AMI, a French NGO which has been implementing public health projects in Dala, environmental cleanliness and hygiene practice in the township are very poor since water and sanitation facilities are not well-facilitated at most households resulting in high percentage of water-borne diseases, such as diarrhea and dysentery, especially among children.
In order to improve such situation, the Government of Japan under its GGA Programme will provide a fund for AMI to rehabilitate existing 6 community ponds including fencing and hand-pumps. Moreover, seminars on prevention of water-borne diseases and water-resource management will also be provided to the residents. It is expected that, with the new facilities, the environmental sanitation will be improved and contribute to the healthy living of Dala population.
The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 15 November 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Mr. Erwan Le Grand, Country Director of “ AMI ”.
