JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for construction of all-water road bridges and culverts

connecting Kawmutha and Shwetaw villages in Kayin State

21 November 2006

The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA) , will provide a grant aid of US$ 61,125 to “Kawmutha-Shwetaw Road Construction Committee” for construction of an all-weather road, bridges and culverts between Kawmutha and Shwetaw villages in Hpa-an Township, Kayin State .

The village access road connecting Kawmutha and Shwetaw villages is an important route for transportation of people, goods and services for the residents. The existing earth road is usually flooded in rainy season and bumpy and dusty in dry season, hampering the villagers' daily activities. In particular, students, elders, sick people and pregnant women who need to travel to other parts of the area for various reasons face difficulties in transportation. Moreover, poor infrastructure limits community development.

In order to provide a secure and better access road for those villagers, the Government of Japan under the GGA Programme will provide funding for construction of a 3-mile long laterite-topped earth road furnished with 3 bridges of 12 feet span, 2 bridges of 8 feet span and 2 box culverts. It is expected that this assistance will contribute to all round development of the area and to strengthen traditional friendship between Japan and Myanmar .

The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 21 November 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Saw Aung Tun Yi, Chairman of “ Kawmutha-Shwetaw Road Construction Committee”.
