JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for construction of Mhan Kin Monastic School

in Yangon Division

01 December 2006

The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme , will provide a grant aid of US$ 79 ,5 0 1 to “Mhan Kin Monastic School Construction Committee” for construction of Mhan Kin Monastic School in Thaketa Township in Yangon Division.

In response to the need in the area, monks in Mhan Kin monastery have started to provide free formal education including some teaching aids such as stationary since 1993. During the course of operation, the number of students has risen to more than 715 that the space becomes very tight. Accordingly, the need for a proper school building is a big concern for the monks and the parents. In order to solve the overcrowding issue and to provide a better learning environment for the students, the construction of a four-storey reinforced concrete school building with 12 class rooms will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. It is expected that the support will contribute to the improvement of schoolchildren's access to quality education as well as community development in the area.

The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 1 December 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Myo Win, Chairman of “ Mhan Kin Monastic School Construction Committee”.
