The Government of Japan , under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA) , will provide a grant aid of US$ 68,561 to “Myanmar Ceramic Society (MCS)” for construction of a ceramic vocational training center in Nyaung Dagar Village in Twante Township , Yangon Division. Traditionally Twante Towhship was called ‘a town of pottery' where most residents were involved in a pottery-related industry. However, a recent prevalence of cheap plastic products, the potters market had significantly dwindled, and deprived many potters in Twante Township of their jobs, having brought them to cheap day labors. Against this background, MCS is planning to open training courses where the locals could learn the techniques of producing celadon porcelain goods, not traditional glaze-ceramic ones. By producing a new line of products, those potters would be able to find a different and more promising market, thereby to make more stable earnings. However, MCS can't open its training courses for the lack of necessary facilities, while it has already prepared the curricula and lecturers for starting its courses. Therefore, with a view to create job opportunities for the people in Twante Township , the Government of Japan, under its GGA Scheme, will provide a fund for MSC to construct a two-storied training center equipped with ceramic kilns. It is expected that the local potters will get new skill effectively with the new facility and make their living in a more stable way.
The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 8 December 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Myo Thant Tyn, Chairman of “ Myanmar Ceramic Society”.
