The Government of Japan , under the Japan's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA) , will provide a grant aid of US$ 61,605 to “Chan Pyin and Oo Shi Kya Villages Bridge Construction Committee” for construction of a bridge between Chan Pyin and Oo Shi Kya villages in Maungdaw Township in Northern Rakhine State.
Chan Pyin and Oo Shi Kya villages are, 1.6 km apart, separated by Chan Pyin Creek. The creek swells and deepens in monsoon season and strong and turbulent current sometimes capsizes boats plying between the two villages. Although the users are much prone to disaster during bad weather, they have no other alternative to cross the creek. The residents there have a very strong desire to construct a bridge crossing over dangerous Chan Pyin Creek, however, they are financially incapable to do so. In consideration of the all round improvement of the population residing in those two villages, construction of a reinforced concrete bridge for pedestrians, 100 meter by 2.5 meter, will be funded under the Japan's GGA. The project will be implemented with the technical assistance from Bridge Asia Japan (BAJ), a Japanese NGO which has operated in Myanmar since 1995. It is expected that the bridge would contribute to safe and better transportation between two villages.
The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 27 December 2006 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Phyu Thee Chay, Chairman of “ Chan Pyin and Oo Shi Kya Villages Bridge Construction Committee”.
