The Government of Japan, under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA), will provide a grant aid of US$ 76,940 to “ National Blood Center ” for procurement of medical lab equipment for 17 blood banks in general hospitals in various states and divisions.
National Blood Center (NBC) was established in 1932 as a blood bank in Yangon General Hospital compound and later upgraded to a blood center in 2003. The center's functions vary from collection of blood from the volunteer donors, blood grouping, matching, screening and producing blood products . In addition, NBC provides technical guidance and planning for blood transfusion services in other public hospitals in states and divisions. In order to upgrade the status of Red Cell Immunohaematology Services in Myanmar, the Government of Japan under GGA Scheme will provide a fund to NBC for procurement of some basic equipment to perform blood group serology such as semi-automated cell washers and dry blots for (17) blood banks all over the country which have high blood usage. It is expected that the assistance would contribute to safe blood supply and prevent all haemolytic transfusion reactions.
The Grant Contract to this effect is signed on 16 January 2007 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Daw Thida Aung, Senior Consultant Pathologist/ In-Charge of “National Blood Center”.
