The Government of Japan, under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA), will provide a grant aid of US$ 85,248 to “ Specialist Hospital , Waibargi in Yangon” and US$ 84,682 to “ Specialist Hospital , Kandawnadi in Mandalay ” for upgrading of the facilities.
In early March 2006, the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak occurred in 13 townships in Mandalay and Sagaing divisions in Central Myanmar . Timely disease control measures were strictly performed by the relevant authorities that the situation was under control in a short period. However, based on the experience of AI in other countries, recurrence of the disease could happen at any time in future. In this regard, the Government of Japan under its GGA Scheme will provide funding to AI designated Waibargi and Kandawnadi hospitals for upgrading of the facilities and procurement of some essential medical equipment to strengthen isolation and quarantine functions there.
The support to those hospitals is in line with the priority activities as stated in the National Strategic Plan for Avian and Human Influenza Pandemic Preparedness and Response and the project will be executed in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) who has provided technical assistance throughout the whole process.
The Grant Contracts to this effect were signed on 17 January 2007 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy C hief of M iss io n , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. U Aung Kyaw Oo, Medical Superintendent of “ Specialist Hospital , Waibargi” and Dr. U Khin Maung Pyone, Medical Superintendent of “ Specialist Hospital , Kandawnadi”.
