The Government of Japan has decided to extend Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) of US$ 80,292 to “School Construction Committee for Fire Victims in Hlaing Township ” for construction of an extension building at No.3 Basic Education Primary School (branch middle school) in Shwe Pyi Thar Township , Yangon Division.
The fire broke out in Hlaing Township on 28 November 2005 gutting 1,557 homes and leaving 1,962 families homeless. After the victims were resettled in Shwe Pyi Thar Township , in realization of the emergency need for a school for the children from those families, the Government of Japan had constructed two single-storyed reinforced concrete school buildings with furniture, and water and sanitation facilities in time for the 2006-2007 school academic year. A ceremony to hand over the school buildings was held on 7 January 2007 .
Since the opening, many students not only from fire victim families but also from the neighboring areas have joined the school that the space becomes very tight. In consideration of a better learning environment for those schoolchildren, the Government of Japan has decided to provide another single-storeyed reinforced concrete building comprised of 9 classrooms and an office with furniture, and related facilities. It is expected that this second phase of the assistance will benefit the students there in their pursuit of formal studies.
The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 18 January 2007 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon , between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Aye Kyu, Chairman of the “School Construction Committee for Fire Victims in Hlaing Township ”.
