JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for Construction of a Clinic in Myawaddy in Kayin State

7 February 2007

The Government of Japan, under the Japan 's Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA), will extend a grant aid of US$ 78,106 to “Myawaddy Clinic Construction Committee” for construction of a clinic in Myawaddy Town in Kayin State .

The initiative for establishment of Myawaddy Clinic was started when Dr. Saw Simon Tha, a famous Neurosurgeon in Myanmar and his charity mobile health team called “Kweh Ka Baw” visited Myawaddy Township in a renovated bus with a small operation theatre to provide free medical and surgical services to local population in the area. As the need in the area was quite large, the team realized that a permanent clinic was necessary to house post-operative patients and those who require close observation.

In consideration of the more efficient treatment and care for the patients, a forty-bedded clinic furnished with outpatient department, x-ray room, laboratory, medical store and water and sanitation facilities will be constructed under GGA. Initially, the clinic will be able to address the needs relating to general medical and surgical, obstetric and gynecology and pediatric. It is expected that the contribution would enable the Team to better perform their activities and benefit the patients in need.

The Grant Contract to this effect was signed on 7 February 2007 at the Embassy of Japan in Yangon, between Mr. Tetsuro Amano, Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Saw Simon Tha, Chairman of “Myawaddy Clinic Construction Committee”.
