The Government of Japan under its Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA) granted a total of 178,822 US dollars for two programs on prevention and control of Malaria in Bago Division.
The grant contracts to this effect were signed on 21 st February 2007 between Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and each representative of Vector Borne Diseases Control Teams in Bago East and Bago West .
Malaria is one of the most serious diseases in Myanmar and the areas where those two programs will be carried out; i.e. Phyu, Oaktwin, Taungoo, Yedashe, Pyay, Pauk Khaun and Paunde townships in Bago division are no exceptions. Because of the lack of knowledge on preventive measures against Malaria and the inferior access to proper medical care, Malaria is the biggest cause of mortality.
In order to alleviate the plight of people caused by Malaria, Vector Borne Diseases Control Teams in Bago East and Bago West have made plans to prevent and control Malaria in the respective areas. Those projects are aimed for comprehensive approaches to counter Malaria, including medical care (early diagnosis, improved treatment), prevention (distributing insecticidal mosquito net) and education (dissemination of knowledge on Malaria through various channels).
In view of the dire situation and the importance of those two programs, the Japanese government decided to fund both Vector Borne Diseases Control Teams for procurement of microscopes, insecticidal mosquito nets and medicines, which are essential for successful execution of those plans.
It is expected that the situation of Malaria in targeted areas will be significantly improved through effective use of the materials funded by the Japanese Government's GGA.
