JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

under Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA)

for upgrading of " Myo Hla Self - Help Hospital "in Bago Division

15 March 2007

The Japanese Government under its Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA), granted US$ 71,261 to provide “Myo Hla Self-help Hospital” in Myo Hla Town, Yedashe Township (Bago Division), with essential medical facilities and equipments.

Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Deputy Chief of Mission , Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and U Aung Kyi, Chairman of “ Myo Hla Self-help Hospital Management Committee ” signed the grant contract on 15 th March 2007 .

Myo Hla Town is located at very remote area in the northern part of Bago Division. As there are no proper medical facilities in the area, the local people have to go to Pyinmana or Taungoo, both of which are about 60km away from Myo Hla Town , to access to proper medical care. It is extremely difficult for the sick people to go such a long distance and to pay expensive transportation fee to those cities every time.

Given the situation, “Myo Hla Self-help Hospital Management Committee” was formed to construct a hospital in Myo Hla Town . The committee has built the hospital by donations from the residents, but the hospital still lacks appropriate facility and necessary medical equipment because of the shortage of resources.

Therefore, taking into the consideration the graveness of the current situation and sincere effort made by the committee, the Japanese Government decided to fund the hospital to construct additional facilities such as X-ray room and to procure basic medical equipment such as operation theater lights.

It is expected that this grant will enable the locals to access proper medical care and significantly improve the medical situation in the said area.
