The Japanese Government under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance Scheme (GGA) decided to extend assistance totaling 116 ,10 7 US dollars to two humanitarian assistance projects in Kayah State entitled “The Project for Construction of School's New Toilet and Water Supply in Kayah State ” and “The Project for Provision of Medical Equipment for Ho Se and Loi Nan Hpa Clinics in Kayah State ”.
Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister-Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan to the Union of Myanmar signed the grant contracts on 13 th July 2007 with U Maw Lay, Chairman of “Schools' New Toilet and Water Supply Committee in Kayah State” and U Lorenz Soe, Chairman of “Ho Se and Loi Nan Hpa Clinics Management Committee” respectively.
Kayah state, the border area with Thailand , has a long history of fighting between armed ethnic groups and Tatmadow since the Myanmar 's independence in 1948. As a result of that, Kayah state is one of the least developed areas in Myanmar and so the need of development in this area is very high.
Especially, in Loikaw of Kayah state, the residents in this area have endeavored to repair schools by themselves. However, these schools facilities such as toilets and water sanitation are still too bad to offer the certain level of hygienic environment to schoolchildren because of their financial constraints.
On the base of such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for setting water supply facilities and 93 toilets to four high schools and one middle school in Loikaw through its GGA scheme.
In the southeastern and northwestern parts of Kayah state, Ho Se and Loi Nan Hpa Clinic s have been established by the initiative of Kayinni National People's Liberation Front (KNPLF) with the residents in Ho Se and Loi Nan Hpa. However, in these clinics even the necessary medical equipment at the least is so short that doctors are troubled to treat their patients well. Therefore, people in these areas have been obliged to go to other hospitals in the long way .
In order to secure the better access to the good medical service and health care in these areas , 66 patient beds, oxygen concentrator, suction machine, autoclave, microscope etc. will be also funded in both clinics by the Government of Japan under its GGA scheme .
It is expected that th ese two GGA programs w ill enable people in Kayah State to improve their living situation and better perform their activities.
