The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, granted US$ 86,190 for the provision of medical equipment to the Dental Care Unit of University of Dental Medicine in Mandalay .
Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Minister-counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. U Mya Thaw, Rector of University of Dental Medicine in Mandalay , a recipient organization, signed the grant contract on 20 th Septem ber 2007 .
Mandalay University of Dental Medicine is one of the major teaching and learning institutes of dentistry in Myanmar, and its dental care unit offers dental treatment almost at free of charge to the people in need. Various treatments are provided to an average of 3,000 patients per year by young doctors in their internship and experienced teaching staff. In order to promote the Institute's efforts to provide affordable dental treatment, the Government of Japan has decided to provide fund for procurement of 24 dental chairs and units, a porcelain furnace, a casting machine, a tissue processing unit, an ultrasonic clearner, an apex locator, a dental X-ray machine, ten diamond blades and a water purification system.
It is expected that this assistance will improve the hospital's medical service and benefit the patients in the area.
