The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, granted US$ 85,250 for provision of medical equipment for the Myitkyina State General Hospital in Kachin State .

Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Minister-counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission , the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar , and Dr. U Win Ko Ko, Medical Superintendent of the Myitkyina State General Hospital , a recipient organization, signed the grant contract on 9 th January 2008 .

The Hospital was established in 1958 and upgraded to a 300-bedded facility in 1991 to provide treatment in general medicine, child health, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, psychiatry, as well as surgical and dental cases. In recognition of the hospital's attempt for providing earlier detection of breast cancer for the population of Kachin State , the Government of Japan decided to fund a mammogram with processor and an ultrasound with a probe.

It is expected that this assistance will lower the mortality rate from breast cancer and benefit women in the area.
