The Exchange of Notes concerning the Grant Aid of the Japanese Government for "Improvement of Maternal and Child Health Care Services (Phase VIII )" was signed between H. E. Mr. Yasuaki No gawa , Ambassador of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, and Mr. Ramesh Shrestha, Representative, UNICEF in Myanmar, at Sedona Hotel in Yangon on 14 January 200 8 .

The Government of Japan will provide its Grant Aid of US$ 1.79 million in this project for the purchase of rapid test kits and medicines for malaria, vaccines for measles and tetanus , essential medicaments and equipment for reproductive health and others. They will be distributed to township hospitals and rural health facilities in Myanmar through UNICEF, in collaboration with the Government of the Union of Myanmar.

This project has been developed through consultations among the Ministry of Health of the Union of Myanmar, the Government of Japan and UNICEF, aiming mainly at improving the health care for mothers and children in Myanmar, especially in rural areas. In this context, the Government of Japan has already provided a series of assistance for s even consecutive phases for the same projects amounting to US$ 31.9 million from 1999 to 2006.

This project is expected to contribute to further improve the situation of maternal and child health in Myanmar through supporting the work of UNICEF, and to strengthen the friendship between Japan and Myanmar.
