The Japanese Government , under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 81,638 to a humanitarian assistance program in Magway Division entitled “The Project for Construction of Pakokku AIDS Training Centre in Magway”.
Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, signed the grant contract on 18 January 2008 with Mr. Martin Pun, Chairman of the Myanmar Business Coalition on AIDS.
The Myanmar Business Coalition on AIDS (MBCA), one of the local NGOs, was established in 2001 and has initiated HIV/AIDS prevention programme in Myanmar . The MBCA aims to motivate business leaders and community to improve knowledge, attitude and behaviors regarding HIV/AIDS. In 2007, the MBCA started their work in Pakokku. As Pakokku is one of the high rate mobile population cities, there is potential risk of illness and deaths related to HIV/AIDS. However, there is no proper space and resources for the programme in Pakokku.
In realization of importance of the training centre, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGA Programme for construction of a two-storey training centre building and related training facilities such as projectors, printers and so on.
It is expected that this assistance will help HIV/AIDS prevention in Myanmar and strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar .
