The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$ 76,996 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Mahar Damar Sariya Monastic School in Yangon Division”.

Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, signed the grant contract on 28th January 2008 with U Tun Aye, Chairman of Mahar Damar Sariya Monastic School Construction Committee.

Mahar Damar Sariya monastery first provided formal education courses to more than 1000 children between 1963 and 1986.However, after a fire in the area, the monastic school moved to the present site, and restarted its teaching activities in 1993 in order to deal with the need for a formal education. Since then, the number of students has risen to more than 500 and, as a result, the need for a proper schoolhouse become a more and more serious concern for the monastic school.

In order to eable Mahar Damar Sariya monastic school to provide a better learning environment, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGA Programme for the construction of a two-storey reinforced concrete school building comprised of 8 classrooms, school furniture and water and sanitation facilities. It is expected that this assistance will benefit the students of the monastic school in their pursuit of formal studies and strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
