The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, granted US$ 46,256 for rehabilitation of Yin Nyein water supply system in Mon State.
Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Minister-counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission, the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Thein Htun, Chairman of the Yin Nyein Water Supply Committee, a recipient organization, signed the grant contract on 30th January 2008.
Hand dug wells and the gravity flow water supply system are the only water sources for the villagers of Yin Nyein (North), Yin Nyein (South) and Tha Byu Chaung Villages. The former water source dries up in dry season and the latter needs to be repaired at least once in two weeks because it was installed more than 20 years ago. In response to the request of “Yin Nyein Water Supply Committee”, the Government of Japan under the GGA Scheme will provide funding for the replacement and extension of pipelines, construction and renovation of water posts and renovation of a reservoir.
It is expected that this assistance will improve the water supply and health for the villagers in the above areas. In addition, the time to fetch water for their daily use will be much reduced, enabling them to engage more in other activities for the improvement of their living.
