THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

FOR

“THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN TONLI HTU and KAUNG KA HTAUNG WARDS, KACHIN STATE ”

1 February 2008

The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 81,686 to a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Primary Schools in Tonli Htu and Kaung Ka Htaung Wards, Kachin State ”.

Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, signed the grant contract on 1 February 2008 with U Khaw Kwe Khin, Chairman of Putao Township Schools Construction Committee.

The schools situated in Tonli Htu and Kaung Ka Htaung wards in Putao township were established in small wooden buildings in 1968 and 1983 respectively. As both of them have become too old, the need for proper school buildings becomes a big concern for the teachers and the parents. They need to be renovated immediately.

In order to provide a better learning environment for the schoolchildren, a one-storey brig-nogged school building with 6 classrooms and sanitation facilities will be constructed at each location under Japan's GGA Programme.

It is expected that the support will contribute to the improvement of learning environment and strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar .
