The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$ 54,866 to a humanitarian assistance program in Yangon Division entitled “The Project for Strengthening of National Health Laboratory ( Lower Myanmar ) in Yangon Division”.
Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar and Dr. Ne Win, Director of the National Health Laboratory in Yangon , signed the grant contract on 18 th February 2008 .
The National Health Laboratory, a public health laboratory for avian influenza(AI) at present, was established in 1963. The laboratory has been attemping to provide better public health service for the people not only in Yangon Division but in all the southern part of Myanmar such as Bago and Ayawaddy Divisions. In recognition of their effort, the Government of Japan decided to fund equipment for AI diagnosis, in collaboration with WHO Myanmar, such as a thermal cycler, two autoclaves, a biosafety cabinet, two low temperature freezers, centrifuge tubes, an ice making machine, a microwave, a mixer and so on.
It is expected that this assistance will strengthen the laboratory's function in surveillance and diagnosis for AI and pandemic influenza.
