19 February 2008

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$ 85,737 to a humanitarian assistance program in Yangon Division entitled “The Project for Construction of North Okkalapa Model DOTS Center in Yangon Division”.

Mr. Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar and Dr. Daw Oo Oo, Township Medical Officer of North Okkalapa Urban Health Center , signed the grant contract on 19 th February 2008 .

The North Okkalapa Model DOTS Center was opened in 1999 under North Okkalapa Urban Health Center to give diagnosis and treatment for tubercular patients. As tuberculosis(TB) is one of the major causes of death in Myanmar , the Model DOTS Center has tried to introduce Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) to improve the situation. In recognition of the center's attempt, renovation of the Model DOTS Center building, an X-ray machine and a generator will be funded under the Japanese government's Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) programme.

It is expected that this contribution will benefit the patients in need and enhance the center's efficiency.
