JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for "The Project for Construction of Footpath Bridges in Kup Pa Kaung Village and Rathedaung Township, Rakhaine State "

The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme granted totally US$ 159,321 for two humanitarian assistance programs in Rakhine state.

Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, signed the grant contracts on 29 February 2008 with U Maung Than, a member on behalf of the Chairman of Kup Pa Kaung Village Development Committee, and U Oo Kyaw Thein, Chairman of Villages Development Committee respectively.

The life of people in Rakh i ne state rel ied heavily on the water way. However, weak water way infrastructure limits community's access to public facilities and the flow of goods and services available in the region. In consideration of the all round betterment of the population residing in Kap P a Kaung Village and Rathedaung Township , reinforced concrete bridge s will be funded at each location under the Japan 's GGA Programme. The project s will be implemented with the technical assistance from Bridge Asia Japan (BAJ), a Japanese NGO which has been operati ng in Myanmar since 1995.

It is expected that the bridge s w ill contribute to the better flow of people, commodities and services , and will improve the standard of living in the area.
