JAPAN'S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE

for "The Projects for Construction of a Bridges in Mon State "

12 March 2008

The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , granted US$ 85,851 for a humanitarian assistance program in Mon state.

Mr.Tetsuro AMANO, Minister – Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Chit Win , the Chairman of Village s Development Committee , signed the grant contract on 1 2 March 2008 .

For people living along Motthama gulf in Paung township, the road of about 16km is necessary for access to public facilities and flow of goods and services. Although they once used a wooden bridge on the road over the Muehauk creek, since the bridge deteriorated and finally collapsed, the daily transportation of the residents in the area has been hampered. Especially, in the rainy season, when they have to use ferry boats as the creek is swollen, infrequent boat services, capsize accidents and high boat fares cause a considerable inconvenience to villagers. In consideration of better socio-economic activities of the population in the area to be brought by smooth transportation, a reinforced concreted bridge will be funded under the GGA scheme .

It is expected that the bridge w ill contribute to the better flow of people, commodities and services throughout the year, and will improve the standard of living in the area.
