"The Handing over ceremony of emergency relief for the damages caused by the storm Nargis"

The Government of Japan received a request from the Government of the Union of Myanmar on 5 May 2008 for assistance to Myanmar citizens who are suffering serious damages from storm Nargis, and the Government of Japan provided with emergency relief goods totaling approximately U.S.$ 266,000 to the Government of the Union of Myanmar.

The emergency relief goods: 330 tents, 50 generators and 50 cord reels arrived at the Yangon International Airport on 7 May 2008 by two flights respectively. The Handing Over ceremony of the emergency relief goods was held at the Airport, attended by His Excellency Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, on behalf of Myanmar citizens, and the Ambassador Mr. Nogawa, representing the Government of Japan.

The Ambassador of Japan Mr. Nogawa expressed his deepest condolences, on behalf of the Government of Japan and Japanese people, to the citizens of Myanmar who lost their invaluable lives during the cyclone Nargis in Myanmar . Besides, the Ambassador also said that the Government of Japan is positively considering to give further assistance to the cyclone victims to overcome the difficulties and eventually return to their peaceful lives soon.

Regarding this, His Excellency Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint stated that all the emergency relief goods from the Government of Japan were the goods of emergency needs for the victims. Myanmar has never experienced before the serious damages that occurred this time. He also mentioned that Myanmar welcomes further assistance from Japan .

The Government of Japan provided emergency assistance to Myanmar when it was struck by cyclones in 2002, 2004 and 2007.
