"Dispatch of Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team to the Cyclone Disaster in the Union of Myanmar "

•  Responding the recent cyclone disaster in the Union of Myanmar, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team to the Union of Myanmar based on a request from the Government of Myanmar. The Japan Medical Team consists of 23 members, including one Foreign Ministry official, four medical doctors, seven nurses, one pharmacist, five co-medical staff, and five logistics staff. They will arrive at the Yangon International Airport at 17:30 by a charter flight on 29 May, 2008 .

•  According to the Government of Myanmar, the recent cyclone caused more than 77 thousand deaths and a considerable number of injured and displaced as of 25 May. With other dangers remaining, such as infectious diseases, people of Myanmar are still suffering hardship.

•  The Government of Myanmar, taking account of the immense damage by the disaster, has been accepting medical teams from neighboring countries. The Government of Japan, in response to a request of the Government of Myanmar, has dispatched the disaster relief preparatory medical team on 25 May. As a result of their discussion with the authorities concerned including the Ministry of Health, and visit to the cyclone-affected areas, the Government of Japan recently decided to dispatch the Medical Team to Labutta, Ayeyarwady Division.
