"The project for improving Study and Living Environment of 'Mary Chapman School for the Deaf' in Yangon Division "

September 12, 2008

The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 87,159 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Improving Study and Living Environment of ‘Mary Chapman School for the Deaf' in Yangon Division”.

Mr. Mitsuji Suzuka, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Daw Margaret Kyaw Mya, Principal of Mary Chapman School signed the grant contract on 12 th September 2008.

Mary Chapman School was founded in 1920 as the first school for the hearing-impaired in Myanmar. Even though the number of students at the beginning was only 3, it has increased to 316 at present. Most of the students board in the school and have been longing for a place for exercising during the rainy season for their physical and mental health and practicing sports. In addition, water supply of the school is cut when it rains heavily because of the poor condition of water pump house.

In order to enable Mary Chapman School to provide a better learning and living environment for their students, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGA Programme for the construction of an all-weather gymnasium and the repair of a water pump house. It is expected that this assistance will benefit the students of Mary Chapman School by promoting their health and social participation through sports, and strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
