The Japanese Government's Grassroots Grant Assistance for

"The Project for the Reconstruction of Yadanar Myintzu Monastic School in Ayeyarwaddy Division Destroyed By th Cyclone"

The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 88,366 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for the Reconstruction of Yadanar Myintzu Monastic School in Ayeyarwaddy Division Destroyed by the Cyclone ”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Tin Win , c hair person of Yadanar Myintzu Monastic School Construction Committee signed the grant contract on 24 th November 2008.

Yadanar Myintzu Monastic School started to provide informal education in 1979 and was authorized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to provide formal education in 1996. But Cyclone Nargis caused devastation on Yangon and the Irrawaddy delta area at the beginning of May 2008. It destroyed most of the existing school buildings Yadanar Myintzu Monastic School. Up to now, classes of 248 students have been hold in only one building left, using every possible spaces including under its raised-floor.

In order to help providing a better learning environment for the students, a school building, which is one-storey construction of reinforced concrete comprised of four classrooms, school furniture, and a walkway will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. It is expected that this support will provide children with access to better educational services and will contribute to community development in this area as a whole, and will further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
