The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 86,667 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Thone Kwa Township Htone Gyi Post Primary School in Yangon Division ”.
Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Pyo Zaw Oo, chairman of Zayar Maung Community Development Society signed the grant contract on 24 th November 2008.
Thone Kwa Township Htone Gyi Post Primary School started to provide formal education in 1960. But Cyclone Nargis caused devastation on Yangon and the Irrawaddy delta area at the beginning of May 2008. It destroyed all of the existing school buildings in Htone Gyi Post Primary School . At present, the classes have been conducted in the nearby monastery building.
In order to help providing a better learning environment for the students, two school buildings, which are one-storey constructions of reinforced concrete comprised of 6 classrooms, school furniture and sanitation facilities, will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. It is expected that this support will provide children with access to better educational services and will contribute to community development in this area as a whole, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar .
