The Government of Japan, under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 76,626 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Installation of Eelectric Power in Sabebin Village in Mandalay Division ”.
Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi , Minister/ Counselor Deputy C hief of M iss io n of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Htay Lwin, Chairman of Sabebin Village Electric Power Line Construction Committee, signed the grant contract on 3 December 2008.
Sabebin Village is situated south-western part of Mandalay Division, Most villagers earn their living by agriculture or small-scale industries such as jaggery-making. The villagers currently rely on candle and battery lights for their activities after dark. To improve this situation, Enthusiastic villagers under the leadership of the Chief Abbot of the village monastery have striven to install a transformer, which is connected to the national electric grid on the Yangon-Mandalay Highway in 2004. However, the villagers could not afford to install the electric power line to each house due to shortage of fund. In recognition of the villagers' concerted efforts, an electric power system in the village will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Program. It is expected that the project will improve the standard of living of the villagers, contribute to the all-round development of Sabebin Village and strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
