January 12, 2009

The Japanese Government , under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 82,300 to a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Zay Ya Thukha Monastic Post Primary School in Nam Khan Township , Shan State ”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi , Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Sai Htun Aye,Chairman of Zay Ya Thukha Monastic School Building Construction Committee , signed the grant contract on 12 January 2009 .

This monastery was established in 1993 and it started to provide formal education to 100 children in 1998. Since its opening, the classes have been conducted in the monastery building and bamboo buildings, which need repair or reconstruction every year. As the number of students has increased to about 850, the need for a proper schoolhouse became a significant concern to the people in this area.

In order to provide a better learning environment, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGA Programme for construction of a two-storey reinforced concrete school building comprised of 10 classrooms. This assistance is expected to benefit the students in their pursuit of formal studies and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar .
