The Japanese Government , under it s Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme , decided to extend assistance of US$ 81,140 to a humanitarian assistance program in Shan State entitled “The Project for Construction of Seikta Thukha Monastic Primary School in Lashio T ownship , Shan State ”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi , Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Ye Myint, Chairman of Seikta Thukha Monastic School Building Construction Committee , signed the grant contract on 12 January 2009 .

This Monastic School started to provide formal education in 1996. Since the opening, the school has accepted pupils from a variety of ethnic groups who live in the region. As the number of students has exceeded 2000, the need for a proper schoolhouse became a considerable concern to the people in this area.

In order to provide a better learning environment, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGA Programme for construction of a two-storey reinforced concrete school building comprised of 6 classrooms and school furniture. It is expected that this assistance will benefit the students in their pursuit of formal studies and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar .
