The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA)Scheme, decided to extend assistance ofUS$88,400 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled ”The project for construction of Aung Se Mingala Monastic Middle School in Bogalay Township, Ayeyarwaddy DivisionDestroyed by the Cyclone”.
Mr. KazuyukiTakeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief ofMission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Aung Zaw Htwe, Chairman of AungSeMingalaSchoolBuilding Construction Committee, signed the grant contract on 21 January 2009.
Until the Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, Aung Se Mingalamonastic middle school had provided formal education to the students in the area, using three school buildings in the monastery compound. However, Nargis destroyed all their school buildings. Nowadays, they are forced to offer their classes in limited available spaces using the Monastery building and temporal school building.
In order to provide a better learning environment for the students, a two-storey reinforced concrete school building and school furniture will be funded under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme. This assistance is expected to benefit the students in their pursuit of formal studies and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
