Ceremony to hand over Tamiflu and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Union of Myanmar

1.The Government of Japan has decided to provide the Union of Myanmar with approximately 50,000 courses of TamifluÒ, antiviral medicine, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for 35,000 people to assist the efforts of the Union of Myanmar to combat the Pandemic Influenza.On 28 February 2009, an official ceremony for this assistance was held and H. E. Mr. Yasuaki Nogawa, Japanese Ambassador to the Union of Myanmar, handed over the items above to the Government of the Union of Myanmar.

2.Prevention and containment of Pandemic Influenza outbreak is a common challenge for East Asia.The Government of Japan, through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) under the close coordination with WHO, stockpiled 500,000 courses of Tamiflu and PPE for 700,000 people by the Summer, 2006 at Singapore, which would be dispatched for early containment operation in case of influenza outbreak in the entire ASEAN region.In addition, upon request from ASEAN, additional 500,000 courses of Tamiflu and the half of the PPEs stockpiled in Singapore is to be provided and distributed among ASEAN member states (for Myanmar 50,160 courses of Tamiflu and PPEs for 35,000 people).

3.This provision of Tamiflu and PPEs to ASEAN member states including the Union of Myanmar is expected to help them to enhance their preparedness for the possible outbreak of pandemic influenza.
