The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of seven vehicles for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Transportation of Fire Engines, Rescue Truck and Ambulance for Cyclone Nargis Affected Area in Ayeyarwaddy Division”.
Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Myint Soe, Divisional Chief of Ayeyarwaddy Division Fire Brigade, signed the grant contract on 6 October 2009.
The Cyclone Nargis, which hit Myanmar on 2-3 May 2008, caused massive damage to buildings and loss of property and lives throughout Ayeyarwaddy Division. In response to the destruction of Nargis, the Government of Japan will fund the program to provide five Fire Engines, a Rescue Truck and an Ambulancefor Cyclone Nargis affected area. All vehicles will be delivered to the fire-stations in Ayeyarwaddy Division from Japan.
This assistance is expected to benefit the people in the region by enhancing protection and rescue activities against disasters, thereby further strengthening existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
