Signing of Exchange of Notes for Japan's Grant Aid Assistance

H.E. Mr. Yasuaki Nogawa, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, has signed and exchanged the Notes with H.E. U Soe Tha, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development of the Union of Myanmar, which covers an amount of 581 million yen (approximately 5.6 million US dollars) for the project of "Construction of Primary School-Cum-Cyclone Shelter in the Area Affected by Cyclone Nargis” to be provided under the Grant Aid scheme of the Government of Japan.   The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development on 4 December 2009.

Under this project, approximately 20 school-cum-cyclone shelters will be constructed in coastland of Ayeyawaddy delta area to protect villagers against cyclones, especially storm surge.  These shelters are two story reinforced concrete buildings and each of them has the capacity to accommodate most of the residents of the village in its located area when a cyclone hit the area.

It is expected that the project will contribute to the improvement of disaster preparedness of Myanmar and promote existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
